![]() In breeding my birds the most common symptoms that I saw were egg binding, soft shelled eggs, thin shells and dead-in-shell. My poor little gouldian finch Pumpkin has come down with air sac mites. For many years these little mites have been a constant irritation to Gouldian breeders and have resulted in many deaths and poor breeding performance. I was confident that my birds had plenty of this important mineral. Air Sac Mite are a common cause of difficult breathing in Gouldian Finches. Again, I wish I could be of more help but we can only recommend health issues to a Veterinarian. Calcium - I always believed that cuttlefish bone, oyster shell and crushed eggshells were great calcium supplements for my birds. I would suggest contacting who you purchased these birds from. If there is a breeder of Gouldian finches in your area, maybe they can help you. I hope you can find someone in your area who can help. We cannot legally try to diagnose your birds or recommend any medications, unfortunately. If there is a Vet in your area who treats birds, they would know what medication to give. Preventative treatment needs to be administered at the right time, and not year round. They mostly succumb to these mites during molt, stress, extreme temperatures or if they have poor nutrition. Air sac mites are believed to be found in most if not all captive and wild Gouldian finches and a symbiotic relationship is suspected. When birds in the same flock or location keep dying, some causes can be a virus, bacteria, fungus, other diseases possibly transported by insects, contaminated water or food, some type of toxin in the air – as you can see it isn’t possible to know the cause without testing by a Veterinarian.Īir sac mites are very common with Gouldian finches. I'm sure you can buy a smaller amount from here but the shelf life of moxidecton plus can be more than double if kept in the refrigerator and shaken well before use.I am so sorry this is happening to your birds. The birds will preen that area and will ingest some that wont effect them as the dosage is very safe WITH ADULT BIRDS, there is no need to dose healthy young birds. If you have only a few birds you can place two drops undiluted on the bare skin on the back of the neck,lift the feathers to access the bare skin OR place one drop on the bare skin under the wing pit of both wings. These tiny mites ( Sternostoma tracheacolum) infest the bird’s airways. The dosage rate is 5ml to one litre of water given as their drinking water for three days for worms and airsac mites for the whole flock. Moxidecton plus treats airsac mites and most worms including tape worms. The northern fowl mite spends all his time on the bird, living on the duck for up to three weeks, though a life cycle as short as seven days is common for him. These days moxidecton plus is all you need which is available from the merchandise here in AFF. Both mites are bloodsuckers, but vary in how much time they spend on the duck. Marcus's writings are way out of date with the use of alcohol when back then we were using animal stock wormers eg cattle, pig and sheep wormers, these days water is the norm for mixing. Should I dose my 2 week old gouldians with invermectin when I do the rest of the birds or will the parents give them immunity while feeding their young ? thanks in advance for any opinions
